JSON Support
JSON data types are for storing JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) data, as specified in RFC 7159. Such data can also be stored as text
, but the JSON data types have the advantage of enforcing that each stored value is valid according to the JSON rules. There are also assorted JSON-specific functions and operators available for data stored in these data types.
The JSON data type supported in YCQL is jsonb
. The JSON functionality in YCQL is a subset of the JSON functionality in PostgreSQL.
1. Prerequisites
You need a YugabyteDB cluster to run through the steps below. If do not have a YugabyteDB cluster, you can create one on your local machine as shown below.
$ ./bin/yugabyted start
Connect to the cluster using ycqlsh
to run through the examples below.
$ ./bin/ycqlsh
Create table with a JSONB column
ycqlsh> CREATE KEYSPACE store;

Insert JSONB documents

Update entire document
You can do this as shown below.

- Update a missing JSONB document resulting in an insert of a subdocument.

Note
JSONB upsert only works for JSON objects and not for other data types like arrays, integers, strings, etc. Additionally, only the leaf property of an object will be inserted if it is missing. Upsert on non-leaf properties is not supported presently.5. Clean up (Optional)
Optionally, you can shut down the local cluster you created earlier.
